25-day-old Serama Chick and More Eggs on the Way

This is Honey Bee at three and a half weeks old, poking around in my herb garden. It’s hard to tell exactly how big she is here, but I’d say not very. She’s about the size of a standard-sized day-old chick.

My Serama and Porcelain d’Uccle eggs from Mary Robbins should be here by tomorrow, and Susan (AHappyChick on BYC) sent me a message yesterday letting me know that 30+ eggs are on their way. Lavender silkies, white silkies, some French Black Copper Marans, and finally, the elusive Araucanas!

I’ll probably do a split hatch in the one large incubator, but if there’s not enough room I’ll bust out the smaller one and use that exclusively for the Seramas. I think. We’ll see when they get here. I absolutely cannot wait, I swear, it’s like Christmas morning when they hatch: you think you know what you’re getting, but you’re never sure, and besides, it’s so much better to actually see them, than just know they’re in there.

More Serama Eggs Coming

I have more Serama eggs in the incubator that I set on the twelfth. Out of a dozen, five had cracked. I know this is crazy, but I read that people have repaired parrot and finch eggs with tissue paper (the wrapping kind) and/or white glue, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’ll take a few pictures later when I candle them.

I also have some more eggs that I got from someone on BYC. I’d lost an auction, but she was nice enough to e-mail afterwards to let me know she still had some eggs available and I bought two dozen for $24! She threw in some Porcelain d’Uccle eggs, too! Those should be here in the next day or two.

Here are Diesel, who’s an Ameraucana/Maran cross at three days old, Serama Nemo (Nemette), who’s two and a half weeks old, and Honey Bee, one of the new baby Seramas, at one day old. The little one kept skittering around trying to get underneath everyone, and Nemette kept wandering off because she was so completely bored. I had a hard time getting pictures of them together, but Diesel was really good!

Nemo was hatched from eggs I got from lingling on Eggbid. Diesel came from AHappyChick, a wonderful breeder on Backyard Chickens. I did a few GREAT trades for her eggs recently. The baby Serama (Honey Bee) is from ladybug4ut1, also on BYC, who sent me a lot of extras.

Just to compare sizes, here are Diesel, who’s an Ameraucana/Maran cross at three days old, the black Serama Nemo (probably Nemette), who’s two and a half weeks old, and one of the new baby Seramas, yellow with brown stripes, one day old. I had a hard time getting pictures of them together: the little one kept skittering around trying to get underneath everyone, and Nemette kept wandering off because she bored. But Diesel was so good!

Day 8: Silkie & Serama Chicks

The chicks’ first day free, wandering on the patio. They mainly stayed within sight of my toes, but a few wandered off for a few moments before fluttering back to “safety”. Goddard stayed with them the whole time, making sure no one got hurt. What a good boy!

The black and yellow one is “Calmette”, Lee decided named her that because it sounds like “Comet” and because she’s so calm. The black one is the smallest, with a gimpy little wing, most likely due to humidity issues in the incubator. I’ve been calling it Nemo, but for some reason I have a strong feeling she’s a girl. She’s the one that cries for attention the most.
