25-day-old Serama Chick and More Eggs on the Way

This is Honey Bee at three and a half weeks old, poking around in my herb garden. It’s hard to tell exactly how big she is here, but I’d say not very. She’s about the size of a standard-sized day-old chick.

My Serama and Porcelain d’Uccle eggs from Mary Robbins should be here by tomorrow, and Susan (AHappyChick on BYC) sent me a message yesterday letting me know that 30+ eggs are on their way. Lavender silkies, white silkies, some French Black Copper Marans, and finally, the elusive Araucanas!

I’ll probably do a split hatch in the one large incubator, but if there’s not enough room I’ll bust out the smaller one and use that exclusively for the Seramas. I think. We’ll see when they get here. I absolutely cannot wait, I swear, it’s like Christmas morning when they hatch: you think you know what you’re getting, but you’re never sure, and besides, it’s so much better to actually see them, than just know they’re in there.

More Serama Eggs Coming

I have more Serama eggs in the incubator that I set on the twelfth. Out of a dozen, five had cracked. I know this is crazy, but I read that people have repaired parrot and finch eggs with tissue paper (the wrapping kind) and/or white glue, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’ll take a few pictures later when I candle them.

I also have some more eggs that I got from someone on BYC. I’d lost an auction, but she was nice enough to e-mail afterwards to let me know she still had some eggs available and I bought two dozen for $24! She threw in some Porcelain d’Uccle eggs, too! Those should be here in the next day or two.

First Hatch!

First black Silkie chick to hatch! Not the first, but the fourth of the bunch. These little babies were our “test” hatch to see if the incubator worked. It seemed borderline cruel and negligent, but I didn’t see another way. And they made it!

I’m actually guessing here, but these are the French Blue and Black Copper Maran, White and Lavender Silkie, and White Showgirl Silkie eggs I got for my mom. They’re eggs. They’ll hatch, feather out, and then we’ll know for sure.

The dark brown ones are Marans, but whether Blue or Black, I’ve no idea. Same goes for the Showgirls and Lavender (Self-blue) Silkies. AHappyChick from Backyard Chickens even threw in some pretty seafoam-colored eggs that will hatch out some “Easter Egg” chickens that will lay olive-colored eggs. We’re excited! They’re due November 19th.
