Cleo, a Show Girl Silkie

Cleo was born on November 19, 2009. In this picture she’s almost a month old. I believe her coloring is buff–I wouldn’t really know, since she’s my first light brown chicken. She’s also bearded with a “bow tie”, that little fluff at the base of her neck above her “cleavage”. She really does seem to have a plunging neckline below the bow tie, and she’s not the least bit shy about it.

My Serama and Porcelain d’Uccle eggs from Mary Robbins should be here by tomorrow, and Susan (AHappyChick on BYC) sent me a message yesterday letting me know that 30+ eggs are on their way. Lavender silkies, white silkies, some French Black Copper Marans, and finally, the elusive Araucanas!

I’ll probably do a split hatch in the one large incubator, but if there’s not enough room I’ll bust out the smaller one and use that exclusively for the Seramas. I think. We’ll see when they get here. I absolutely cannot wait, I swear, it’s like Christmas morning when they hatch: you think you know what you’re getting, but you’re never sure, and besides, it’s so much better to actually see them, than just know they’re in there.

I also have some more eggs that I got from someone on BYC. I’d lost an auction, but she was nice enough to e-mail afterwards to let me know she still had some eggs available and I bought two dozen for $24! She threw in some Porcelain d’Uccle eggs, too! Those should be here in the next day or two.

Sec. 10-1. – Fowl at large. No person shall allow, permit or suffer any geese, turkeys, chickens, ducks or other fowl owned by him or under his control to run at large upon any public street, avenue, alley or place within the city or allow, permit or suffer the fowl to run at large or trespass upon any private property within the city.

So, i.e., keep your poultry in your own yard.

Sec. 46-410. – Prohibited noise.  (6) Animals and birds. No person shall keep, maintain or permit upon any lot or parcel of land under his control any dog, animal or fowl which by any sound, bark or cry disturbs the peace or comfort of the neighboring inhabitants or interferes with any person for the reasonable and comfortable enjoyment of life and property.

If your neighbors complain, out goes a loud chicken.

The above two are complete quotes from the relevant sections of the code. I only quoted the parts about chickens (and other poultry) from the last section.

88.42.040. – Animal Keeping.

Where allowed by Article 2 (Urban Standards), animal keeping shall comply with the regulations of this section.

A. Type and Number of Animals Allowed.

The keeping of animals and poultry for non-commercial purposes shall be limited to the following number of animals. Any animal or number of animals other than the following shall be prohibited.

4. Five female chickens, ducks, geese, or other poultry over 12 weeks of age, or 15 chicks under 12 weeks of age

Five hens, no roosters, or fifteen chicks less than three months old.

B. Location Requirements.

1. Poultry or rabbits maintained on a property out of doors shall be kept in a fully enclosed structure located a minimum distance of 20 feet from any lot line, 50 feet from any dwelling unit, and 100 feet from any school, hospital, or similar institution.

Nemo was hatched from eggs I got from lingling on Eggbid. Diesel came from AHappyChick, a wonderful breeder on Backyard Chickens. I did a few GREAT trades for her eggs recently. The baby Serama (Honey Bee) is from ladybug4ut1, also on BYC, who sent me a lot of extras.
